If you’ve ever thought, "I want to write a book, but I don’t know what to write about," you're not alone. Many aspiring authors feel inspired to write but get stuck in front of a blank page. I was once that aspiring author. I knew I wanted to write a book, but struggled to choose between a memoir, an urban fiction thriller, or a romance. I wasn't sure which path to take first, but my passion for writing and love for the craft kept me going. I've kept a journal and a collection of short stories and poems for over 28 years, and consider myself a very imaginative person. Not knowing where to start with my debut book wasn't due to a lack of passion but because I hadn't yet found the right idea. Through meditation and relying on my faith in the Most High, I was shown what my first book should be. It wasn't an urban fiction thriller, but a devotional dedicated to the Lord, titled "Devotion, Inspiration & God’s Word."

The good news is that the seed of your story already exists within you. You just need to uncover it. Let’s explore ways to reveal it.

Here are 10 Ways to Discover Your Book Topic & Genre:

1. Reflect on Your Achievements and Challenges Overcome

Ask: What life experience changed me?

Memoir, self-help, or faith-based nonfiction might be your genre if you have a powerful testimony.

2. Consider the questions people often seek your advice on.

Do you often find yourself giving relationship advice, career guidance, or parenting tips?

Your book could already be reflected in your conversations.

3. Create a List of Your Passions and Interests

Whether it’s beauty, business, or Bible study, a book awaits within your passion.

4. Consider reviewing your journals or blog posts, whether they are old or recent.

Review your writing and identify which topics you repeatedly focus on. Also, look for messages hidden within your notes.

5. Discover your favorite book genres to enrich your reading experience.

What do you read most often? Romance? Mystery? Devotionals?

Usually, the genres you enjoy reading are the ones you’ll find joy in writing.

6. Try “The 3-Word Exercise”

Select three words that capture your message or personality, such as “Bold,” “Faith,” or “Growth.”

Let these words inspire your topic or genre.

7. Use Prompts to Generate Ideas

Consider answering these questions:

• What do I wish someone had told me five years ago?

• What am I currently healing from?

• What problem can I assist someone in solving?

8. Visualize Your Ideal Reader

Who do you aim to assist or motivate? Imagine one individual. What message would you share to positively impact their life?

9. Identify Gaps in the Market

Is there a topic you rarely see in your community or your culture?

That might be your lane.

10. Pray and free write for 10-20 minutes.

Pray about it, seek a sign, and let your Spirit guide your writing. Don’t edit while writing; just let it flow. Sometimes, divine inspiration comes when you least expect it.

You don’t need to have everything figured out from the beginning. The most successful writers start with curiosity rather than certainty. Be patient with yourself as you explore. You’re not falling behind; you’re in the process of creating something incredible.
