Hidden Opportunities That Many Black Authors Overlook

Welcome to the July edition of the Rise2Write Monthly Newsletter!
Black Writers have fought for generations to gain access to publishing. A century ago, it was illegal for us to read. This is a well-documented historical fact! Between 1740 and 1834, several U.S. states enacted anti-literacy laws that made it illegal to teach enslaved and free Black people to read and write. Our ancestors risked punishment for simply learning to read and write. Highlighting this history is crucial to honing our craft and understanding our roots. Understanding our history is key to shaping our future.
For many years, Black authors encountered considerable obstacles in getting their work published. Some had to use pen names, adopt their slave master's names, or publish without acknowledging their Black identity. Today, the landscape has changed, and platforms such as self-publishing and digital spaces have opened new doors for us to share our voices with the world.
Even now, many Black authors might not recognize where the most promising opportunities lie. We assume they’re determined by Amazon’s rankings or the New York best-seller list. Success isn't just about Amazon or New York rankings or bookstore shelf space. Yes, those are important, great achievements we aren't discrediting, but they’re only a small part of what’s possible and within reach. There’s a whole world of opportunities waiting to be explored, and understanding this can make all the difference. The most successful authors don’t simply write books; they build ecosystems around their knowledge, stories, and experiences.
In this month's newsletter, we want to make sure you are in the loop and taking advantage of all the resources available to you as a Black Author in these times. Here are several opportunities that many Black authors overlook.
1. Speaking Engagements can generate more impact than book sales.
Your book helps build your credibility and has an impact. While many authors aim to sell thousands of books, it’s often surprising how one speaking engagement can earn you more than hundreds of sales. Organizations, schools, universities, churches, conferences, nonprofits, and companies are often eager to hear from speakers who share genuine stories and real-life experiences.
Instead of asking: “How do I sell more books?”
Ask: “Who needs the message inside my book?”
Whether your book addresses leadership, faith, entrepreneurship, healing, education, parenting, or overcoming adversity, there's an audience looking for that expertise. Even with fiction, you can organize events, book clubs, and similar engagements. Many speakers ask for anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per event, depending on their experience and audience size.
Check out our newsletter below to learn more about the platforms where you can get booked:
2. Your Book Can Become Multiple Streams of Income
Once you've published your book, keep in mind that this is just the start! Your journey as an author continues, and your book provides a strong foundation for creating even more successful products. These products will help you grow your brand and reach even more people.
One manuscript can become:
An Audiobook
A children’s edition
A podcast series
A paid newsletter or webinar
An online course
A coaching program
Merchandise
Many well-known authors today earn far more from products and services related to their books than from royalties. This shift highlights how diverse opportunities can help authors connect with their audience in new and exciting ways to monetize their work.
3. Local Media Wants Local Success Stories
Oftentimes, we are so focused on the global impact that we neglect the local impact. Stop overlooking media outlets in your own communities. Local newspapers, television stations, podcasts, community magazines, and radio shows are constantly looking for inspiring stories. Your story may be exactly what they’re searching for. One local interview often leads to additional opportunities. Your audience isn’t just on social media!
Things to Prepare:
A professional author photo
A short biography
A press release
A media kit
A few interview talking points
4. Grants Exist for Writers and Creative Entrepreneurs
Many of us hesitate to apply because we believe grants are exclusively for nonprofits. However, that's not true at all. Every year, organizations offer funding to writers, publishers, and literary organizations. Begin applying and make use of the available free resources. Some grants offer: cash funding, marketing support, professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
Learning how to identify and apply for grants can help finance book launches, educational initiatives, community programs, and publishing ventures.
Check out my newsletter below, where I list available grants to apply for in real time:
5. Libraries Are Powerful Marketing Partners
Many libraries actively seek local and diverse authors for programming throughout the year. Getting your book into libraries isn’t just about prestige.
Libraries do more than just lend books; they purchase books, host author talks, invite community speakers, recommend titles to readers, support literacy programs, and connect authors with schools.
Take advantage of local libraries to expand your author brand and raise awareness of your book.
6. Build an Email List, Not Just Social Media Followers
Focus on building an email list alongside your social media followers to create a more direct and personal connection with your audience. Having your own email list gives you a reliable way to share updates, offers, and important news, ensuring you stay in touch regardless of changes on social media platforms. Algorithms change. Email lists belong to you. When we consistently communicate through newsletters, we often build stronger long-term relationships with readers than those relying solely on social platforms.
Whether you use Substack, Mailchimp, ConvertKit, or another platform, your email list becomes one of your most valuable business assets.
Here are ideas for what to share:
Behind-the-scenes updates
Writing lessons
Exclusive chapters
Book recommendations
Personal reflections
Early announcements
Readers who feel connected are more likely to buy your future books and recommend your work to others.
7. Work Together Rather Than Compete
There is enough room for all of us! No need to compete! The publishing world often creates the illusion that authors are competing with one another. In reality, we are not! One collaboration can introduce your work to an entirely new audience. Community often grows faster than competition.
Here are ways authors can collaborate:
Joint podcasts
Instagram Lives
Anthologies
Book clubs
Panel discussions
Speaking events
Newsletter swaps
Cross-promotions
Don't hesitate to contact a fellow author to explore collaboration opportunities and promote each other's brands.
8. Optimize Your Book for Search
Search engine optimization (SEO) helps readers discover your work organically over time. Many amazing books never find their perfect readers because readers sometimes can't find them. Let's make sure we are doing everything we can to bring awareness to our masterpiece.
Use keywords readers actually search for in your:
Amazon description
Book subtitle
Author website
Blog articles
Metadata
Pinterest content
YouTube descriptions
Think beyond your title.
9. Take control of your Author brand.
Take charge of your author brand and make it uniquely yours! Embrace your individuality and passions to create a memorable presence that truly reflects who you are. Remember what sets you and your book apart. Your authentic voice is your greatest asset for standing out and connecting with your audience.
Maintaining consistency across your website, social media, newsletters, podcasts, and speaking engagements makes it easier for your audience to recognize and connect with you. Remember, readers don’t just remember books; they remember the people behind them.
To help define your brand, answer questions like:
What do you stand for?
What problems do you solve?
What conversations do you lead?
What impact are you trying to make?
What makes you different?
10. Think Globally
Today, readers can purchase books in digital and print formats across dozens of countries. Self-publishing has opened markets worldwide. Many publishing platforms also support translated editions, expanding access for readers in multiple languages.
A book written in Atlanta, GA, can inspire someone in Johannesburg, London, Toronto, São Paulo, or Sydney. Don’t underestimate your story’s global reach.
Trends in the Publishing Industry for 2026
Several industry trends point to growing opportunities for independent and diverse authors:
The U.S. self-publishing market continues to grow, with millions of new titles published each year.
Audiobook listening has grown steadily, with industry surveys reporting year-over-year increases in the number of people who listen to audiobooks, creating new opportunities for authors to reach audiences beyond print.
Email marketing remains one of the highest-performing digital marketing channels, often delivering stronger engagement and return on investment than social media alone because authors own their subscriber relationships.
Podcast audiences continue to expand, giving authors a low-cost way to share their expertise, build credibility, and connect with readers around the world.
The world is changing constantly, and it’s important to keep up with new trends. Currently, the publishing industry favors authors who use multiple platforms rather than relying on a single sales channel. This strategy can help writers connect with a wider audience and achieve greater success.
Black Authors, stop restricting your reach! Strengthen your author brand by exploring additional ways to connect with your audience while earning income.
The Bigger Opportunity in Publishing
The bigger opportunity from publishing a book lies in its legacy. Our ancestors fought for the right to read. Many fought for the right to write. Some never had the opportunity to publish their stories. Today, we do. Publishing a book is more than achieving a personal milestone; it is preserving history, documenting culture, sharing wisdom, and inspiring future generations.
When Black authors write, publish, and own their stories, it helps create a richer literary landscape where future readers can see themselves on the page.
Your story deserves more than a bookshelf. It deserves a strategy. At Rise2Write Publishing, we believe authors should do more than publish a book. They should build a lasting author brand, retain ownership of their work, and create opportunities that extend far beyond a single launch.
Because your voice isn’t just valuable. It’s part of our collective history and our future.
If you’re a Black author, tell us one opportunity you’re committed to pursuing this year. Share your thoughts in the comments.
