The Best Social Media Platforms for Black Authors in 2026

Welcome to the June edition of the Rise2Write Monthly Newsletter!
Black Writers, times have changed, and it’s important for us to adapt along with it! We no longer need to rely on traditional publishers, bookstore chains, or media outlets to gain visibility. We now have rights to ownership, creativity, residual income, and more. The ball is in our court, and we have the power to make anything happen at any time. Rather than relying on traditional methods, it is important to use available resources to showcase our work. The most important resource we need to tap into is “Social Media.”
Social media has opened up new avenues for us to connect, providing opportunities to monetize, network, create authentic communities, share our stories, and interact with audiences worldwide. I want to remind everyone of the important role social media plays in shaping your author brand, promoting your books, and boosting sales. It's an exciting time to get active and take your author brand more seriously.
For Black Authors, this shift is especially significant. Historically, and to this day, our voices are underrepresented in publishing, marketing budgets have been unevenly distributed, and opportunities for exposure have not been equitable. We have to be more aggressive about taking matters into our own hands. Social media provides a direct path to readers without gatekeepers standing in the way.
But with so many platforms available, it is important to know where we should focus our time in 2026. Now, let’s explore the social media platforms delivering the strongest results and how we, as Black authors, can use them strategically!
Why Social Media Matters More Than Ever
According to DataReportal’s 2026 Global Digital Report:
Over 5.5 billion people worldwide use social media.
The average user spends approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes daily on social platforms.
More than 75% of consumers discover new brands and products through social media.
Book discovery increasingly happens online before readers even visit Amazon or a bookstore.
For authors, social media is no longer optional.
It’s one of the most effective tools for:
Building your Author brand and credibility
Growing a reader community
Launching new books
Increasing book sales
Securing speaking opportunities
Attracting podcast interviews
Creating additional income streams
1. LinkedIn
Best for Nonfiction Authors, Business Authors, Coaches, and Thought Leaders
Nonfiction Authors, listen up! Do not overlook LinkedIn just because you believe it’s only for job seekers. In reality, LinkedIn has grown into one of the most influential platforms where professionals share their expertise and personal stories. People on LinkedIn have the money and will invest in your book to advance and excel in their careers and personal lives.
Why LinkedIn Works
LinkedIn’s algorithm continues to favor organic content more than many other social platforms. Creators who regularly share valuable posts can reach thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands, of viewers without paid advertising. I’ve observed influencers begin with around 5k followers and grow to over 100k within a year through consistent posting and storytelling.
LinkedIn Statistics
Over 1.2 billion members globally
More than 67 million companies have a presence
Content creators see significantly higher organic reach than on Facebook
Users are often decision-makers, professionals, educators, and business owners
Great for Black Authors Writing About:
Personal development
Leadership
Entrepreneurship
Career growth
Faith and purpose
Memoirs
Social impact
Content Ideas
Lessons from your book
Behind-the-scenes writing journey
Author success stories
Industry insights
Personal experiences and reflections
If you’re a nonfiction author, growing your Author brand on LinkedIn should be one of your top priorities in 2026.
2. Instagram
Best for Building a Personal Brand
Ready to get serious about building your Author brand?
Instagram continues to be one of the top platforms for authors to tell their visual stories. It’s ideal for sharing your book mockups and reels that highlight your work. Readers like seeing a face that matches the name and engaging with the author behind the book. Make sure to create an account with your author name, and consider setting up a Creator account in the Author category.
Instagram Statistics
Over 2 billion monthly active users
Reels continue to receive the highest engagement
More than 70% of users discover products through Instagram
Bookstagram communities continue to influence book-buying decisions
Why Black Authors Thrive Here
Instagram allows authors to showcase:
Their personality
Their writing journey
Their book launches
Their speaking engagements
Their everyday life
Authenticity wins. Readers often support authors they feel connected to long before they purchase a book.
Content Ideas
Writing tips
Author quotes
Book excerpts
Reader reviews
Book launch countdowns
Day-in-the-life content
3. Threads
Best for Organic Reach and Community Building
It’s hard not to enjoy posting on Threads! It has quietly become one of the most powerful social media platforms for authors. Unlike many other social networks that focus on followers, Threads continues to offer smaller creators the chance to connect with large audiences, making it an exciting platform for everyone to network and engage on.
Why Authors Love Threads
Fast audience growth
High engagement rates
Meaningful conversations
Less pressure to create polished content
Threads Strengths
Authors can build authority by simply sharing:
Writing lessons
Publishing experiences
Storytelling tips
Personal reflections
Many Black authors have found Threads especially welcoming because discussions tend to be more community-focused than follower-focused. It isn’t hard to find our tribe on Threads! Make sure to sync your Instagram with your Threads account as well, so you can save time and avoid double-posting.
Content Ideas
Writing observations
Author lessons
Reader questions
Book recommendations
Inspirational thoughts
4. TikTok
Best for Fiction Authors and Viral Book Marketing to Increase Book Sales
LISTEN!! BookTok continues to influence book sales worldwide. Just one viral video can elevate you from an author to bestseller status. I've personally sold books on TikTok without any advertising, simply by creating my bookstore and posting content every day.
TikTok Statistics
More than 1.8 billion active users
BookTok has generated billions of views
Readers frequently discover books through short-form video recommendations
Why It Works
Readers don’t just buy books. They buy into emotions. TikTok excels at emotional storytelling. People love storytelling! I strongly recommend that you create a seller account.
Popular Black Author Content
Reading excerpts

Book trailers

Fiction Genres Performing Well
Romance
Fantasy
Young Adult
Thriller
Historical Fiction
5. YouTube
Best for Long-Term Visibility
YouTube is timeless, and your videos can go viral at any time! It remains the world's second-largest search engine. Unlike social posts that disappear quickly, YouTube videos can continue to generate traffic for years.
YouTube Statistics
More than 2.8 billion monthly users
Over 1 billion hours watched each day
Videos frequently appear in Google search results
Why Authors Should Care
A video published today could still be generating readers two years from now. That’s powerful. Don’t neglect posting videos and community posts with your direct book links for purchase.
Content Ideas
Writing advice
Publishing tutorials
Author interviews
Book reviews
Live Q&A sessions
Behind-the-scenes content
6. Facebook
Best for Community Groups and Mature Readers
Facebook isn't dead! The audience has simply shifted, offering even more opportunities to boost sales. Many authors think Facebook is outdated, but the numbers tell a different story. Using Facebook ads can be a smart way to increase your book sales and reach new readers.
Facebook Statistics
Nearly 3 billion monthly active users
Strong engagement among readers over age 35
Facebook Groups remain highly active
Why It Matters
The money is on Facebook! Many book buyers are adults with disposable income. These readers are active on Facebook.
Effective Strategies
Create an author page
Join reader groups
Build a private reader community
Host live events
Facebook may not be the trendiest platform, but it continues to generate sales.
Rise2Write is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Now, the question of the hour is which platform you should focus on.
The answer depends on your GOALS!!
If You Write Nonfiction:
LinkedIn
Instagram
Threads
YouTube
If You Write Fiction:
TikTok
Instagram
Threads
YouTube
If You’re a New Author:
Threads
Instagram
LinkedIn
Facebook
If You Want Speaking Opportunities:
LinkedIn
YouTube
Instagram
If You Want Book Sales:
TikTok
Instagram
Facebook
Email Marketing
Final Tip: Be aware, as most authors tend to overlook this.
While social media remains important, your most valuable asset is your email list. Algorithms evolve, platforms rise and fall, but your email list is yours to control. It provides a reliable way to regularly communicate with your audience, share updates about your writing journey, offer promotions or sales, and help your audience get to know you better. According to multiple marketing studies, email marketing consistently delivers one of the highest returns on investment among digital marketing channels. While social media should help you grow your audience, your email list should help you own it.
In 2026, Black authors have more opportunities than ever. Always remember, you don’t need a huge publishing deal or celebrity fame to connect with readers. What you need is obedience, consistency, authenticity, and a willingness to show up where your readers already spend their time. The most successful Black authors aren’t necessarily the best writers. They’re often the most visible.
Your story matters. Your voice matters. And there has never been a better time to share them with the world.
Share in the comments: Which social media platform has helped you connect with readers the most? Share your experience in the comments. I would love to hear what’s working for you.
