How to Keep Selling Books Long After Launch (A Post-Launch Strategy)

Welcome to the January edition of the Rise2Write Monthly Newsletter!

As Black and Brown Writers, our primary focus is often on manuscript execution. Once it's complete, our next priority is pre-launch to drive strong sales for the launch. Let’s talk about after the launch date. Do we mentally prepare for what happens after our book is released to the world?

Real marketing and branding don’t start until after the book is launched and the initial excitement has died down.

Guess what?! The marketing and branding never end!! Unless you decide to give up on all your invested hard work and commit book suicide! (We don’t do that over here)

As Black and Brown Authors in particular, longevity matters. This is our legacy and an additional stream of unlimited residual income we generate in our sleep every time someone purchases our book. Let’s take the money out of the equation. How rewarding is it every time someone decides to read your story?

It is so important to remember that your story is not seasonal!! It’s TIMELESS, but maintaining sales requires Intention, Strategy, Consistency, and a Positive attitude.

This month, we will explore how to revive, reposition, and resell your book six months or more after its launch, without burnout, large advertising budgets, or starting from zero.

Why Most Books Stop Selling After Launch:

Most Authors experience a sales drop because:

• Marketing stops once launch week ends.

• Content becomes repetitive. (“Buy my book”)

• You feel hesitant or self-conscious about promoting your book.

• You feel unsure about how to promote and are unsure how to pivot.

• You started to feel uncertain about yourself and your book.

• There is no ongoing sales strategy in place.

• The book isn’t tied to a larger brand or platform.Every one of these problems has a solution.

Let’s Explore 5 Ways to Re-Brand and Market your Book:

Step 1: Reposition Your Book: Same Book, Different Angle

Your book doesn’t need to be changed! Only the way you talk about it should shift. Six months after launch, move from promoting to positioning.

Try this:

• Try to center your book around a particular problem it aims to solve.

• Focus on showcasing how readers change, not just on the themes themselves.

• Connect your book to what's happening now, such as current conversations, seasons, or special moments in life, to make it feel more relevant and engaging.

Examples:

• “A book every woman healing from burnout should read.”

• “This memoir is for anyone starting over.”

• “What my book teaches about faith, resilience, and identity.”

Same book. New entry point.

Step 2: Rotate Your Book Content Instead of Reposting the Same Exact Material.

Readers tend to ignore repetition, but they respond well to variety. Develop 4–5 content categories and switch between them each week.

This maintains your book's visibility without appearing overly promotional.

Step 3: Create a Post-Launch Campaign: Yes, You Still Need One

Consider your book launch as the beginning, not the end.

Every 3–6 months, run a mini-campaign:

• A themed week such as Healing Week, Faith Week, or Purpose Week.

• A book challenge or reading prompt.

• A giveaway or signed-copy promotion.• A “Why This Book Still Matters” series.

Even a 7-day campaign can boost sales and visibility.

Step 4: Put Your Book Back in Front of New Audiences

If you’re promoting only to the Same Audience, sales stall.

Expand reach by:

• Pitching podcasts that align with your book’s message.

• Speaking at local events, churches, libraries, or book clubs can be a wonderful way to connect with your community and share your passion. It’s a friendly and engaging opportunity to inspire and be inspired!

• Collaborating with other authors or creators.

• Presenting your book as a workshop or discussion guide.

A new audience means a new life for your book.

Step 5: Connect Your Book to a Greater Purpose

Books that keep selling are usually connected to:

• A newsletter

• A course, bookclub, or workshop

• Speaking engagements

• Coaching or consulting

• A community or movementYour book should be the entry point, not the only offer.

Ask yourself:

“What does my reader need after they finish this book?”

That answer leads to longevity.

The Long-Game Sales Framework

6 Month + Focus:

0–1 Launch & visibility

2–3 Reviews + content rotation

4–6 Speaking, podcasts, collaborations

6+ Repositioning + platform integration

Books that last are marketed like brands, not announcements.

What Worked: Long-Term Sales Lessons from Indie Authors

1. Books sell when authors keep talking! Not when they stop talking!

2. Remember, reviews are always a valuable part of your marketing. Keep gathering them regularly to build trust and credibility with your audience.

3. Remember, teaching is often more effective than just promoting. When you share your knowledge and skills genuinely, people are more likely to trust and connect with what you're offering.

4. Visibility is more important than virality. Maintaining consistency helps build trust.

Always Remember:

  • Going silent after Releasing your Book is the Worst thing you can do as an Author! Silence kills momentum more than low sales. Most authors stop selling books not because their story isn’t good, but because they stop treating their book like a living asset.

  • Books don’t expire. Many sell better months later once the author gains confidence and clarity.

  • Don’t permanently undervalue your work.

BOOK SELL WHEN:

  • You teach consistently

  • You talk about transformation, not pages

  • You show up even when sales are quiet

  • Consistency builds brands.

Black and Brown Authors, Silence kills books! Never Stop Promoting!
